Restaurant and Taverna Kehaghias Stavromenos - Rethymnon - Crete - Greece   In the area of  Rethymnon on the island of  Crete, the "Kehaghias" ranks as one of the traditional restaurants. Existing since 1968, it was completely redesigned, modernized and considerably extended in 2000. These measures resulted in a most comfortable parlour with 100 seats and a large open fireplace in it's center. Natural stone and wood form the general view.         In summertime the large sliding glass doors are opened to give access to the terrace, which is roofed by a pergola with climbing vines and gives room to another 50 seats. From the parlour one can view right into the kitchen which underlines the traditional character. Furthermore, they use only top quality  olive oil here, in accordance with the traditional customs: Even French Fries are prepared with pure olive oil.         The menu also includes several Greek plates of food as they are typical today, because the "Kehaghias" is located by the village border of  Stavromenos close to the intersection of the Old and the New National Roads at  Sfakaki among many smaller hotels and apartments facilities, so they needed to adapt some dishes to "tourism" taste. The emphasis is however still made by the full bandwidth of original Cretan cuisine, which in particular includes the traditional "mezedes":         These are manifold small starters which can also be easily combined to a complete banquet even for large companies. So do not miss to try the excellent Tigania (stewed pieces of pork), the Apakia (smoked pork in sour sauce), the Manitaria (fried mushrooms, unfortunately not available in high summer), the mixed salad with pickled dried tomatoes ...         The small plates are passed around and everybody serves himself as it is the Cretan habit. The waiters are ready to advise you on request and to explain all the "Orektika" (starters) in detail.
